Lake County contains 26 lakes, including the largest freshwater lake in California, and is surrounded by the state's coastal mountain range. Located within Lake County are some of the most trafficked highways in the state—the principal arterial corridor of SR 20, 29, and 53.

More ore than 60% of Lake County has been devastated by wildfires since 2015. The county's dry arid climate and terrain make it prone to wildfire and flooding. Lake County is projected to have up to 2.5 times greater wildfire frequency by 2100.
